Can you get a VA loan with a less than honorable discharge?
Can you get a VA loan with a less than honorable discharge?
In general, veterans who received a less than honorable discharge are not eligible for VA home loan benefits, including the VA loan program. The VA home loan program is available to eligible service members, veterans, and certain surviving spouses, but one of the basic eligibility requirements is that the borrower must have a discharge that is classified as other than dishonorable.
There are some exceptions to this general rule, however. The VA may consider a veteran’s request for an exception to the discharge requirement in certain circumstances, such as if the veteran can demonstrate that their discharge was the result of a “mitigating circumstance,” such as a medical condition that was not properly diagnosed or treated.
In these cases, the veteran must provide evidence to the VA to support their request for an exception, and the decision to grant an exception is ultimately up to the VA. Additionally, even if the VA grants an exception to the discharge requirement, the veteran must still meet all of the other eligibility requirements for the VA loan program, including the minimum length of service requirements.
Overall, while it may be possible to obtain a VA loan with a less than honorable discharge in some limited circumstances, in general, veterans who have received a less than honorable discharge are not eligible for VA home loan benefits.
